Windows 7 upgrade experiences

by admin on Dec.14, 2009, under Support

Hi!

We took the decision to upgrade all our clients to Windows 7 (22 clients in a mix of XP and Vista). Here follows some of the experiences we had along the way, stay tuned as this post will be updated for each experience we have. I’ve devided them into software related, and hardware related experiences. We ignored all warnings. The recommendation was to update these drivers prior to installation, but we decided to do these updates after the upgrade to save time. We’ll see if this was a dumb decision.

Software related:

  • Trend OfficeScan must be uninstalled. Restart required. (This is our companys anti-virus software)
  • Make sure that at least Service Pack 1 is installed on Vista computers.

Hardware/driver related:

HP EliteBook 2530p (Vista)
Warning: HID (Human Interface Devices): HP Quick Launch Buttons
Warning: Keyboard Filter

Installation results:
Installation went through without any problems.

HP 6910p (Vista)
Error: HP ProtectTools Security Manager
Solution: Go into msconfig and uncheck Protecttools from Autostart. Reboot and uninstall HP Protecttools, reboot computer. Run install again.

Installation results: No problems!

HP nc8430(XP)
Just upgraded to Vista first. Then started to upgrade.

Installation results: No problems, except I had to reinstall the Cisco VPN Client, everything else works fine!
Edit: Some unit is disconnecting from the computer every 5 minutes or so, you hear the sound of unplugging hardware from the computer, but you cant really see what unit it is. Will come back with more on this later..

Talking about WordPress Internet Explorer 8 Accelerator | anant garg

by admin on Dec.08, 2009, under News

Hi! Found this great article!

WordPress Internet Explorer 8 Accelerator The Problem Many a times while browsing the internet we come across text which we would like to blog about. A straight-forward solution is to copy the text and paste it in our WordPress text editor. However, we have to copy the site URL separately as well as the title of the page. To ease this process, the new Internet Explorer includes a useful feature called Accelerators. Great! So now we need a plugin for WordPress..

Howto: Permit active FTP sessions through a Cisco ASA

by admin on Jan.09, 2009, under Network

This information is also available at: http://www.elifulkerson.com/articles/cisco-asa-ftp-fixup-snippet.php and helped me a lot with my FTP problem!

—————
This is a snippet for the Cisco ASA firewall that permits active FTP sessions to pass through. This is the equivalent to the ‘fixup ftp’ commands of the previous PIX OS versions. For whatever reason this functionality was no longer enabled by default in my Cisco ASA 5510 [Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance Software Version 7.0(5)].

If you are already using the class-map, policy-map or service-policy commands, this snippet is probably not going to work. You would need to implement the similar commands without disrupting the rest of your service policy. In that case, however, you probably should already know what you are doing.

Here is the snippet:

class-map inspection_default
match default-inspection-traffic
!
!
policy-map asa_global_fw_policy
class inspection_default
inspect ftp
!
service-policy asa_global_fw_policy global

Sharepoint and Vista: I need to login to sharepoint every time I try to navigate to Sharepoint

by admin on Dec.01, 2008, under Sharepoint, Support

Problem:
Everytime when I try to save a document or browse something in Sharepoint the domain login prompt shows up. This also applies when you are connected to a domain and logged in with a active directory account. Even though Sharepoint is receiving its login accounts from the Active Directory, this will not work if you don’t have network browsing enabled in Windows Vista.

Solution:
Enable network browsing in your network settings in Windows Vista.

Lenovo Thinkpad X300 docking problem

by admin on Nov.21, 2008, under Support

Problem:
When you connect your x300 to the docking station (DisplayLink) and use an external monitor you get a really slow response time and the computer feels slow and non-responsive at times.

Solution:
Do not use the VGA port on the docking station. Connect the external monitor to the VGA port on the X300 directly instead. Much more responsive and faster graphics.

Problem:
When connecting an ethernet connection to the usb ethernet port adapter, you dont get more than 100 mbit. The USB adapter does not support it.

Solution:
To get more than 100 mbit, use the network port on the x300 directly instead.

This kindof eliminates the use of the docking station doesnt it? Well, not exactly, its still possible to connect several usb units to the docking station like a mouse, keyboard and memory card readers.
